In her inaugural lecture, associate professor Corrette Ploem highlights the invaluable role of technology in medical advancement and raises critical questions about its impact. Ploem focuses on exploring the legal safeguards needed to provide accountability for technology in health care. While technology such as AI and DNA analysis enable healthcare improvements, fundamental questions arise. Ploem examines whether technology actually adds medical advances or, on the contrary, leads to over-medicalization and overburdening of the healthcare system.
The role of medical professionals is also central: will technology eventually take over their decision-making role? The importance of personal contact in healthcare and the growing data intensity through technology are also highlighted. Ploem emphasizes that ensuring confidentiality and data control is crucial in a data-rich healthcare environment.
By exploring these questions, Ploem seeks to define what constitutes "good law for healthcare technology." Her role as professor of Law, Healthcare Technology and Medicine includes not only research, but also teaching and advising healthcare lawyers. She aims to prepare physicians and professionals for the challenges and opportunities presented by technology in health care, with an eye for ethical, legal and practical issues.
