Research ethics involves applying essential ethical and legal principles to scientific research. While researchers hold the primary responsibility for ensuring their work adheres to ethical and legal standards, an increasing number of academic journals and Dutch and European funding bodies now mandate formal approval from an Ethics Committee before an article is published or a grant is awarded. The Ethics Committee of the Amsterdam Institute for Legal Studies at the University of Amsterdam is now responsible for this approval.
