Anniek de Ruijter from the Law Centre for Health and Life, together with Martin McKee and Tamara Hervey, recently published an article in The Lancet Regional Health – Europe on “Health, the missing chapter in the Draghi Report on Europe's future”.

Mario Draghi’s report on Europe’s future competitiveness emphasizes the urgent need for integration to address challenges in technological innovation, energy transition, and sustainability, positioning the EU against global powers. However, while the 400-page report highlights workforce productivity issues and advocates investments in education, technology, and labor market reforms, it largely neglects health—a crucial factor in economic growth. Poor health reduces workforce participation and productivity, especially in disadvantaged groups, and can devastate small businesses. Investments in health systems are equally critical, enabling productivity through innovation, clinical research, and adoption of new technologies while acting as economic anchors in post-industrial areas. Health investments also symbolize the social contract, fostering trust and progress. Draghi’s vision for Europe’s competitiveness would benefit significantly from integrating health as a cornerstone of its roadmap.
