The article and item in the NOS news describe problems in the Dutch healthcare system regarding reimbursement for breast reconstruction surgery for women who have had breast cancer. Although the then-minister prohibited Dutch health insurers from asking patients to take nude photos themselves, this still happens. These patients face obstacles and rejections in obtaining reimbursement for necessary procedures, leading to additional stress and prolonged suffering.
Insurers are simply not allowed to ask policyholders because the minister has stipulated it. Thereby, it is extremely stressful for these vulnerable women who have already gone through a whole process.Corrette Ploem in NOS
Corrette Ploem called the whole course of action unseemly and careless. She criticises the attitude of Dutch insurers, who seem to be hoping that patients will lose the courage to persevere when rejected. Ploem stresses that plastic surgeons should determine whether surgery is necessary and that this care should not be considered a luxury, but essential for the well-being of patients.
