After four years as program director of the Master of Health Law, Johan Legemaate passes the torch to Rolinka Wijne. With an abundance of experience within health law and as a lecturer, a clear vision, and full of energy, she started the academic year in her new position.

The Master of Health Law has been offered in Dutch at the UvA since 2006, first as a track within the Master of Public Law and since the 2019-2020 academic year as an independent master. The mission of the Health Law Master is to train lawyers driven by knowledge, curiosity and creativity to become experts in health law, who are aware of the possibilities and limitations of law in a social context.

New role

Before filling her new position as program director, Wijne was already an active part of the Health Law Master's program as a lecturer and thesis coordinator. "Until June 1, 2023, I was a lecturer and taught the courses Medical Liability and Law Enforcement in Health Care. I was also thesis coordinator. I still teach the two aforementioned courses," says Wijne. "In my current position, I benefit greatly from the experience I gained as a lecturer. I was able to work very independently and working with the previous program director allowed me to see how he fulfilled his role. I have a good relationship with the other teachers and that too is helpful now."

I see it as my mission to make education even better through more alignment, structuring, unification. And of course we have to keep up with the times. It makes me excited when I think about being able to flesh that out with the teachers. Rolinka Wijne

Ambitions and challenges

This academic year, the Health Law Master's program is celebrating its fourth anniversary as an independent master's programme. Besides getting a brand new programme director, the Master also underwent some innovations. Wijne played an important role in devising and implementing them. The most important innovation is the expansion of the skills line within the Master. Her enthusiasm is driven by the ambition to optimize the Master's programme and address challenges constructively. "I see it as my mission to make education even better through more alignment, structuring, unification. And of course we have to keep up with the times. It makes me excited when I think about being able to flesh that out with the faculty."
