In April 2023, the Law Centre for Health and Life welcomed Mahsa Shabani to our team as an Associate Professor in Health Law and Digital Citizenship.

Who are you?

My name is Mahsa Shabani. I will be taking the function of Associate Professor in health law and digital citizenship at UvA. In the previous years I have been working as Assistant Professor in health privacy law at Metamedica, Ghent University in Belgium. My doctoral and post-doctoral research was based at University of Leuven in Belgium. My educational and research background is in public law and bioethics, and my research and teaching are interdisciplinary.

What are you going to do here?

I will be focusing on various ethical, legal, and social aspects of innovation in health care, and more specifically regarding artificial intelligence, health data sharing, and genomics. My position is also financed as part of the sector plan on education, citizenship, and democracy in a digital world. That’s why I will be also collaborating with colleagues who are part of this sector plan. In this framework, my aim is to focus on teaching and research on topics related to citizens’ rights in the context of health and digitalization.

What do you do to unwind?

I like to go jogging when I need to relax. I also like reading, traveling, watching movies, and listening to podcasts on various topics!
