In November 2021, the European Parliament’s Special Committee on AI in a Digital Age (the AIDA Committee) published its draft report on artificial intelligence (AI) in a digital age. Hannah van Kolfschooten co-authored an opinion piece in which five shortcomings of this report are identified.
The AIDA Committee report emphasizes the positive aspects of AI as a tool to stimulate innovation and boost the competitiveness of the EU. However, according to Van Kolfschooten and her co-authors, the report fails to address the risks that AI poses in the field of health. In their article, they identify five flaws of the report. Among other things, they state that AI applications in health and healthcare can potentially harm fundamental human rights, aggravate social-economic inequality and are not as infallible as they may seem.
